Ykseyden, yksinäisyyden ja yhteyden virka
Puhe piispanvihkimyksessä Helsingin tuomiokirkossa 12.9.2010
Hyvä seurakunta, Irja hyvä,
Piispan virka on erityisellä tavalla yhtaikaa yhteyden ja erillisyyden, ykseyden ja yksinäisyyden virka. Jotta piispa voisi tehtävänsä mukaisesti vaalia Kristuksen kirkon ykseyttä ja yhteyttä, hänen on suostuttava myös erillisyyteen ja yksinäisyyteen.
Alttarikaiteella ovat odottamassa piispan viran tunnukset, risti, sauva, hiippa ja piispankaapu. Kohta ne annetaan Irja Askolalle, sinulle, Irja. Ne annetaan; ei niitä voi itse ottaa. Ne ovat hiippakunnan ja kirkon, eivät sinun omiasi.
Kirkko antaa ne sinulle merkiksi siitä, että sinut on kutsuttu ja erotettu pappien joukosta erityiseen tehtävään tässä hiippakunnassa. Se tarkoittaa monessa suhteessa yksinäisyyttä; piispan ristiä on kannettava yksin. Se on johtajan yksinäisyyttä, mutta ei vain sitä. Piispa ikään kuin siirretään erilleen, jotta hän erottuisi. Sitä hiippakunta tarvitsee.
Kun liikut seurakunnissa, olet aina merkki siitä, että seurakunnat eivät ole erillisiä yksikköjä vaan kuuluvat koko kirkon yhteyteen. Kun liikut ihmisten keskellä tai näyt julkisuudessa, olet aina merkki siitä, että kirkon jäsenet, jotka kukin elävät omaa elämäänsä omissa yhteyksissään ja verkostoissaan, eivät ole vain yksityisiä kristittyjä kantamassa elämäänsä omilla hartioillaan. He ovat osa kirkkoa, jäseniä Kristuksen ruumiissa. Sitä vahvistaa kun he voivat sanoa: tässä on meidän piispa, ei siis minun piispani, vaan meidän piispa. Sen tähden näkyvät merkit ja yhden ihmisen erottaminen niiden kantajaksi on tärkeää. Piispan virka on kirkon ykseyden virka.
Viran tunnukset luovutetaan sinulle, Irja. Ne eivät ole sinun, mutta ne ovat juuri sinulle tarkoitetut ja sinulle sopivat. Tunnukset eivät ole mitään, jos ei ole ihmistä niitä kantamassa, kokonaista ihmistä, jolla on oma elämänhistoria, omat muistot, omat pelot, oma kaipaus ja oma rukous. Se virka, jonka tunnuksia tulet kantamaan, ei peitä sinua ihmisenä. Siitä tulee osa sitä, miten Jumalan Irjalle antama elämä maailmassa toteutuu. Siinä jatkuu työsi kirkon ykseyden ja ihmisten yhteyden puolesta.
Siihen, että olet tässä kokonaisena ihmisenä, kuuluu myös se, että sinut vihitään piispaksi naisena. En silti sano, että nyt vihitään kirkon ensimmäinen naispiispa. Virka ei muutu naispiispan viraksi, mutta naiseus on nyt osa sitä, miten piispan virkaa kannetaan ja hoidetaan. Se on tärkeä askel. Myös se on ykseyden ja yhteyden askel. Kirkon ykseys ei ole abstrakti asia, vaan se on ihmisten yhteyttä ja työ sen eteen on erottavien ja erilleen asettavien aitojen purkamista.
Tässä hiippakunnassa yhteyden rakentaminen ja erilaisuuden aitojen ylittäminen on vaativa tehtävä. Pääkaupunkiseudulla on erityisen totta ihmisten elämäntavan moninaisuus, kulttuurien kirjo, irrallisuus, yksinäisyys ja uskonnollisen elämän kirjavuus. Olla tämän keskellä Kristuksen kirkon ykseyden merkkinä merkitsee ennakkoluulotonta yhteyksien luomista ja rohkeaa inhimillisen elämän erottelemattoman yhteisyyden puolustamista.
Tänään sinut, Irja, vihitään piispaksi apostolisen perinteen mukaisesti kätten päälle panemisella ja rukouksella. Virassasi et lopulta ole omassa varassasi, yksin tai erillään. Sinut liitetään Kristuksen kirkon pitkään historialliseen yhteyteen, joka ulottuu alkukirkkoon saakka. Ja sinut liitetään Kristuksen maailmanlaajan kirkon yhteyteen. Virka on ykseyden virka. Kätten päälle paneminen merkitsee rohkaisua ja siunausta, mikä on enemmän kuin mikään inhimillinen tuki. Armollisen Jumalan siunaus merkitsee kaikkein syvintä ja perustavinta yhteyttä. Sen varassa lähde hyvillä mielin, rohkeasti ja uteliaasti tehtävääsi, mitä tahansa edessä onkaan.

A Ministry of Unity, Loneliness and Fellowship
An address at the consecration of Irja Askola as the Bishop of Helsinki, 12 September 2010
Beloved in Christ, dear Irja,
The office of bishop is, in a special way, simultaneously a ministry of fellowship and of separation, of unity and of loneliness. In order for the bishop to carry out her commission to foster the unity of Christ’s Church, she must accept a degree of separation and loneliness.
Waiting at the altar rail are the episcopal insignia: the pectoral cross, the staff, the mitre and the cope. Soon they will be given to Irja Askola, to you, Irja. They will be given; they cannot be taken but must instead be received. They belong to the diocese and to the church, they are not your own.
The church gives them to you as a sign that you have been called and chosen from among the clergy for a distinctive task in this diocese. This means loneliness in many ways; the pectoral cross must be carried alone. This is the loneliness of leadership, but not only that. The bishop is, in a way, set apart so that she might stand out. This is what the diocese needs.
When you move about the diocese, you will always be a sign that its parishes are not separate units but that they belong to the fellowship of the whole Church. When you are in the public eye, you will always be a sign that the members of the Church, each living their own lives in their own connections and networks, are not simply individual Christians, shouldering the burdens of their own lives. They are part of the Church, members of the body of Christ. They are strengthened when they can say: this is our bishop, not my bishop, but our bishop. This is why the visible insignia and the setting apart of one person to carry them are important. The episcopate is a ministry of unity.
The insignia are given to you, Irja. They are not yours, but they are meant precisely for you and they suit you. The insignia are nothing if there is not a person to carry them – a whole person with her own history, her own memories, her own fears, her own desires and her own prayers. The ministry, whose insignia you will carry, will not hide you as a person. It will become a part of how the God-given life of Irja is actualised in the world. This is how your work for the unity of the Church and for the fellowship of humanity carries on.
Part of you being here as a whole person is that you will be consecrated bishop as a woman. Nevertheless, I do not say that we are now going to consecrate the first female bishop in our church. The episcopate does not become a female episcopate, but femininity is now a part of how this office is carried out. This is an important step. It is also a step of unity and fellowship. The unity of the Church is not an abstraction but a fellowship of human beings, and working toward this end means breaking down the walls of separation and segregation.
In this diocese, the task of building unity, of genuinely overcoming the walls that divide us, is a demanding one. Especially in the Capital Region, a plethora of lifestyles, a multitude of different cultures, the separation of individuals one from another, loneliness and diversity of religious life are facts of everyday life. In the midst of all this, being a sign of the unity of Christ’s Church means building connections without prejudice and boldly upholding the fundamental unity of human life.
Today, you, Irja, are consecrated according to the apostolic tradition, with the laying on of hands and with prayer. Ultimately, you are not left to carry out your ministry through your own means, alone or in isolation. You are connected to the long, historical fellowship of Christ’s Church, stretching back to the days of the Early Church. And you are connected to the fellowship of Christ’s Church throughout the world. The episcopate is a ministry of unity. The laying on of hands signifies encouragement and blessing far exceeding any human support. The blessing of our gracious God signifies the deepest and most basic connection. In the strength of this connection, carry on into your new ministry in good spirits and with courage and an open mind, whatever lies ahead.
